Mon, 23 Mar 2026 Irish government to cut excise duty on diesel and petrol

Duty on diesel will be reduced by 20 cent and petrol will be cut by 15 cent from midnight on Wednesday.

* Excise duty on diesel will be reduced by 20 cent and petrol by 15 cent until end of May
* Diesel rebate scheme for hauliers and bus operators expected, with rebates backdated
* Diesel prices rose from €1.80 to between €2.20-€2.30 per litre at the weekend
* Petrol prices also rose steeply to about €2 per litre
* Excise reduction will be applied to agricultural or green diesel as well
* Package includes targeted energy supports for pensioners, carers and people with disabilities
* Overall package is expected to cost €235m
* Government says country "urgently" needs to produce its own oil and gas to secure supplies
