Sat, 28 Mar 2026 City's electronic music venues struggling despite growth

Social media posts claimed Newcastle's scene was thriving, but venues claim it is not the case.
Newcastle's electronic music scene has reportedly seen a significant surge in growth, outpacing London with a 72% year-on-year increase, according to a new report. However, despite this impressive statistic, local venues are struggling to stay afloat due to funding issues and rising costs. Cobalt Studios, a small venue on the outskirts of the city centre, has seen success with its cult following but is still facing financial difficulties. Director Kate Hodgkinson attributes their growth in popularity to building a reputation as a safe space for diverse artists and musicians, but notes that this hasn't translated into improved finances. Another local venue, Lubber Fiend, also faces challenges in hosting events due to rising costs and the cost of living crisis. Co-founders Sam Booth and Jon Cornbill believe Newcastle's scene is strong, but its growth is not necessarily a reflection of financial health. Research from the Night Time Industries Association suggests that the 72% growth figure for Newcastle comes from an analysis of event listings data, which may not accurately reflect the financial viability of venues. The report highlights the tension between growing listings and struggling venues, with more events not automatically meaning more viable venues. Both Cobalt and Lubber Fiend believe more practical help should be available to club venues, including a similar levy on large electronic music events as was introduced for arena and stadium shows. Newcastle City Council has expressed its commitment to supporting the sector, but local venue owners are calling for more tangible support to ensure their longevity. The report highlights the complex relationship between growth in event listings and financial health in Newcastle's club scene, with venues struggling despite a reported boom in activity.
