Rivals are emerging for the Las Vegas Sphere - are domes and spheres the future for entertainment?
Sphere Entertainment plans to bring "mini Spheres" with 5,000-seat capacity to other locations, but some experts question whether this format would suit cities like Milan or Amsterdam.
Ben Wood, chief analyst at FDM/CCS Insight, found the Sphere "jaw-dropping" and says venues with large concave screens offer audiences a unique experience that can be compared to augmented reality. However, he acknowledges that not everyone may be drawn to such excess.
Cosm, a rival company offering dome-like facilities for live sports events and films with added visual effects, has venues in the US and plans to expand globally. However, the financial performance of these venues remains unclear.
Dome-based entertainment is not new, with companies like Cinerama and Imax having used similar formats in the past. Absolute Hollywood also offers inflatable domes that house internally projected shows.
