Mon, 06 Apr 2026 'Positives' for tourism despite Iran war uncertainty

Bosses say a good start to the year has been put at risk, but opportunities have also emerged.
Jersey tourism bosses have expressed concerns that recent price increases and geopolitical uncertainty due to the Iran war are threatening what was initially a promising start to the year. Disruptions to oil and gas shipments through the Strait of Hormuz have led to higher costs for businesses, including Seymour Hotels, which has seen significant fuel surcharges on food and drink deliveries. Despite these challenges, tourism officials believe that Jersey can capitalize on growing unease about long-haul travel among British holidaymakers seeking safer alternatives. "Is Jersey a good place to capture people for a safe, short break who would've otherwise been going elsewhere? Absolutely," said Marcus Calvani of the Jersey Hospitality Association. However, both Calvani and Matt Seymour of Seymour Hotels expect costs to continue rising, with suppliers already warning of price increases. While this presents challenges for businesses, they are also hopeful that the situation could lead to increased demand for local tourism.
