Thu, 09 Apr 2026 Lidl begins building its first ever pub

The development is an unusual consequence of Northern Ireland's strict licensing laws.

* Lidl has begun building its first-ever pub in Northern Ireland, after being unable to obtain a standard off-sales licence for its shop in Dundonald.
* The development is due to Northern Ireland's strict licensing laws, which require supermarkets to overcome two hurdles before selling alcohol: buying a surrendered licence and passing an "inadequacy" test.
* Lidl was not able to pass the inadequacy test for a standard off-licence, but was able to do so for a pub after it was shown that two bars near the supermarket had closed in recent years.
* The pub will be located next door to the store and will accommodate up to 60 customers.
* It is expected to open this summer and will serve "selected lines" from Lidl's beer, wine, and spirit range, with a focus on promoting local suppliers.
