Airlines warn of further disruption due to the introduction of a new EU digital border control system.
* Over 100 EasyJet passengers were left behind at Milan's Linate airport after their flight to Manchester was delayed due to long queues at passport control.
* The delays were caused by the introduction of the European Entry-Exit System (EES), which requires biometric and facial recognition checks for third-country nationals, including Britons.
* Passengers reported waiting times of 2-3 hours during peak times, with some missing their flights.
* EasyJet apologised but said the problems were outside of its control, while the airline's spokesperson said it had warned passengers to allow extra time due to "longer than usual" waiting times at passport control.
* Some passengers reported spending thousands of pounds to arrange alternative travel, including £1,800 for one passenger who was forced to fly via Luxembourg.
* Airports and airlines have called for greater flexibility ahead of the peak summer months, as passenger numbers are expected to increase.
* The EES system requires biometric information to be stored for three years and checked again at the border upon leaving.
