The Texas man, who also faces federal felony charges, allegedly had documents advocating for violence against AI executives.
Daniel Moreno-Gama, a 20-year-old Texas man, is facing multiple state and federal charges after allegedly throwing a Molotov cocktail at the San Francisco home of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. The incident occurred on Friday afternoon, with Moreno-Gama attempting to set fire to both Altman's home and the nearby OpenAI headquarters. He was also found in possession of documents advocating against artificial intelligence and calling for crimes against AI executives and investors.
The US Department of Justice is aggressively prosecuting the case, with Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche stating that "violence cannot be the norm for expressing disagreement" and promising to hold Moreno-Gama accountable for his alleged actions.
Moreno-Gama's documents allegedly discussed potential risks posed by AI, including extinction, and included names and addresses of board members, CEOs, and investors at various AI companies. He was also found with incendiary devices, a jug of kerosene, and a lighter.
The incident has sparked concerns about the growing tensions surrounding AI development and investment. OpenAI released a statement condemning violence against anyone, regardless of their affiliation with the AI industry.
Moreno-Gama is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday afternoon to face state charges, including two counts of attempted murder. He also faces federal felony charges for possession of an unregistered firearm and attempted damage and destruction of property using explosives.
