The Snapchat owner is laying off around 16% of staff and withdrawn hundreds of open job roles.
* Snap has cut around 1,000 jobs (16% of its workforce) and withdrawn hundreds of job openings due to increased use of artificial intelligence tools.
* CEO Evan Spiegel said the move is aimed at reducing yearly costs by $500m (£368m).
* The company is shifting towards using AI tools to "reduce repetitive work and increase velocity" among remaining employees.
* This marks Snap's third major layoff since 2022, with previous cuts impacting 20% of its staff in 2022.
* Activist investor Irenic Capital Management has taken a stake in Snap, criticizing the company for being unprofitable despite having hundreds of millions of monthly users.
* Other tech companies such as Amazon, Meta, Block, Pinterest, and Atlassian have also laid off thousands of workers this year, citing increased use of AI tools or plans to invest heavily in AI.
* Tech leaders are pointing to job cuts caused by AI tools as a reason for the need for more investment cash.
