Fri, 17 Apr 2026 Chinese carmaker patents voice-controlled 'in-vehicle toilet'

Seres' plans show how stiff competition in the EV space is putting pressure on carmakers to innovate.
Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer Seres has been granted a patent for an "in-vehicle toilet" that can be used on long journeys or when camping in a car. The feature, which slides under a passenger's seat, aims to provide convenience for drivers and passengers alike. According to the patent filing, the loo will come equipped with a fan and exhaust pipe to minimize odors, as well as a rotating heating element that evaporates urine and dries waste. Waste is collected in a tank that needs to be emptied manually. When not in use, the toilet is concealed beneath the seat, making efficient use of space inside the car. Seres' plans for an onboard toilet are part of a trend in China's electric vehicle market, where manufacturers are incorporating unconventional features to stand out from competitors.
