Mon, 27 Apr 2026 Claire's closes all 154 stores in UK and Ireland with loss of 1,300 jobs

All of the chain's standalone stores have stopped trading in the UK and Ireland.
Claire's has ceased trading in its standalone stores across the UK and Ireland, with 154 locations shutting down. Over 1,300 employees have been made redundant. However, the brand's concessions will remain open. The accessories retailer had struggled financially, entering administration twice within a year. Its owners attributed low Christmas sales and challenging conditions on the High Street as reasons for its downfall. Changing consumer tastes have also contributed to Claire's demise. Fashion expert Priya Raj notes that teenagers are increasingly influenced by social media when making purchasing decisions, favoring minimalistic and curated styles over novelty jewelry. Retail analysts agree that Claire's failure is a result of intense competition from online brands like Shein and Temu, as well as bricks-and-mortar competitors such as Primark and Superdrug. The rise of experiential shopping has also forced retailers to rethink their strategies, with young consumers seeking experiences rather than just products. Claire's US arm has also been struggling, having filed for bankruptcy twice in the past few years.
