Tue, 12 May 2026 Elon Musk said control of OpenAI should go to his children, Sam Altman tells jury

Sam Altman said Elon Musk tried many times for total control of OpenAI, which he's now suing.

* Elon Musk tried to take control of OpenAI and suggested it could pass to his children when he dies, according to Sam Altman.
* Altman said Musk wanted more control over OpenAI after it was founded as a non-profit in 2015 and proposed various ways for him to gain control.
* These included becoming the company's CEO, getting more seats on its board, and making OpenAI a subsidiary of Tesla.
* Musk allegedly believed that he could get more money for OpenAI by restructuring it into a traditional for-profit entity, and that his fame would help attract funding.
* Altman said he was "extremely uncomfortable" with the idea of giving Musk control over OpenAI and its mission to pursue artificial general intelligence (AGI).
* Musk eventually left OpenAI in 2018 and stopped donating $5 million quarterly to the company.
* In an email, Musk told Altman that OpenAI had a "zero percent chance" of success without him.
