Wed, 13 May 2026 London traders hit by 'king of mangoes' shortage

London’s Alphonso mango supply is down this year due to fewer imports and higher prices for shoppers.
Adverse weather conditions in parts of India have resulted in low production of the fruit, according to industry crop reports. This, combined with global factors linked to the Middle East, such as disruption in air routes and longer freight routes, is causing a shortage. Mango Uncle's stall in Tooting has been selling Alphonsos for 24 years and usually draws large crowds at this time of year. However, owner Shabir Khan notes that many Londoners are still eager to buy the fruit despite higher prices. Customers attribute their demand for Alphonsos to its distinct sweetness, rich flavor, and aroma. Food writer Ranji, also known as Tooting Mama, describes them as "very, very sweet" and "not fibrous."
