Wed, 13 May 2026 Plans for Australia's first Trump Tower scrapped due to 'toxic' brand, developer says

The 91-storey luxury hotel on the Gold Coast in Queensland was meant to be Australia's tallest building.
The project, which was announced just three months ago, would have been Australia's tallest building, measuring 335 metres (1,100 ft) high. Developer David Young said: "Let's just say that with the Iran war and everything else, the Trump brand was increasingly toxic in Australia. It was not about not meeting obligations." The Trump Organization claims Altus Property Group failed to meet financial obligations, but Young disputes this, saying there are other luxury brands being considered for the project. Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate said negotiations over profit margins were a major factor in the deal's collapse, while Eric Trump had previously hailed the project as the company's first official foray in Australia.
