Fri, 15 May 2026 Heathrow rival could lead expansion, watchdog says

The aviation watchdog is considering new rules for Heathrow ahead of its possible expansion.
The UK's aviation watchdog, the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), is proposing changes to Heathrow Airport's expansion plans to keep costs in check. Under the proposals, rival companies could be allowed to bid for the construction of a new terminal and third runway at Heathrow. This would give consumers more options and potentially drive down prices. The CAA is also considering other regulatory changes, such as tightening control over Heathrow's spending and introducing competitive tendering elements. These changes aim to "better serve the interests of consumers" and ensure that Heathrow's £33bn development plan does not push up costs for airlines, businesses, and travelers. The proposals come after concerns were raised about the potential impact on costs and competition at Heathrow.
