Sun, 24 May 2026 City's living costs drive workers to food banks

It is so expensive to live in Cambridge a charity says people with jobs need subsidised food.
Low-paid workers in Cambridge are struggling to make ends meet, with some turning to food banks due to the high cost of living. Hundreds of University of Cambridge staff are on strike demanding a pay top-up supplement. The university claims it is open to dialogue but has introduced only limited measures to address the issue. According to Cambridge City Foodbank, even households with employed people are seeking subsidized food due to financial difficulties caused by high rents and low wages. Unite union member William Ridgeon says a "Cambridge weighting" supplement similar to that offered at Oxford University is necessary to ensure workers can afford living in the city.
