Tue, 26 May 2026 Better WiFi for hundreds of trains under government plans

Campaigners welcome the move but say passengers are mostly worried about train fares and delays.

* Government plans to upgrade WiFi on over 1,400 trains across the UK
* New technology will allow trains to connect to low-earth satellites for faster and more reliable service
* Satellite connectivity is expected to improve WiFi availability from 50-60% to at least 90%
* £57m in funding has been allocated for the rollout of satellite connectivity
* Campaign groups welcome the move, but note that passengers' main concerns remain cost and reliability
* Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander is expected to make an announcement about the plans this summer
