Tue, 26 May 2026 Iran war impact to hit household energy bills for the first time

A household using a typical amount of gas and electricity is forecast to pay about £200 more a year.
Energy prices are set to surge by 13% in July, affecting millions of households on variable tariffs in England, Scotland, and Wales. The hike is due to soaring wholesale costs caused by the Iran war, which has increased global gas prices by 25%. As a result, a typical household's annual energy bill will rise by £209 to £1,850. This comes at a time when many households are already struggling with high bills, which have been falling only since April due to government changes. Experts warn that prices could increase further in the autumn and winter, leading to even higher costs for households. The UK government has announced plans to provide support to those who need it most during this period.
