Thu, 28 May 2026 US government prepares to print $250 note featuring Trump's face

Federal law bars printing images of living people on US currency, but Trump allies in Congress are moving to make an exception.
The Treasury Department is conducting "appropriate planning and due diligence" in response to the legislation, while Trump allies have introduced a bill that would make an exception to federal law. If approved, it will be the latest example of Trump putting his face and name on national institutions and symbols. Artistic concepts for the $250 bill are not publicly available, but designs have been requested by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP). The new legislation was introduced last year by US House Representative Joe Wilson and would need approval from both the US House and Senate. The move could also break with a different federal law that specifies the denominations that can be produced. US Senator Mark Warner criticized the plans, saying: "As Americans struggle with rising costs, President Trump's priorities are completely detached from the challenges families face every day." If passed, the bill would not be printed in time for the 250th anniversary on July 4. The Treasury Department has said it is following the law and preparing in case the legislation passes.
