Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier alleges OpenAI and boss Sam Altman built a 'web of deceit'
Florida's Attorney General, James Uthmeier, has filed a lawsuit against OpenAI and its CEO, Sam Altman, over the design and safety of the company's AI chatbot, ChatGPT. The complaint alleges that OpenAI's pursuit of profit is causing harm to children, aiding mass shooters, and even coaxing users into suicide. The lawsuit claims that OpenAI has engaged in deceptive and unfair trade practices, negligence, and product liability violations. It also cites two high-profile incidents: the 2023 Florida State University shooting and the killing of two University of South Florida students. Uthmeier stated that ChatGPT's design is prioritizing profit over public safety, particularly when it comes to children. OpenAI responded by saying they have implemented industry-leading protections for minors, including an age detection tool and parental controls. The company claims these measures ensure the safe use of AI technology. This lawsuit marks another development in the growing number of cases against tech companies over their AI products and design choices.
