Volunteers in Leamington have launched a new type of library where you can borrow household items.
The "Library Of Things" in Leamington allows people to borrow everyday items that are too expensive or bulky to buy and keep. The shop, which opened in January 2026, is run by volunteers who aim to change how people think about buying and owning items.
Membership to the library is free, but there's a small fee to borrow items. The volunteers are flexible with borrowing periods, allowing users to complete their projects without unnecessary restrictions.
The library stocks a wide range of household items, equipment, tools, and unusual items like bunting, a unicycle, and a popcorn maker. Many of the items have been donated by individuals, while some were purchased from charity shops.
Users can borrow items for a fee, allowing them to try out something before deciding whether to buy it. This model has proven successful, with users praising its convenience and affordability.
One user borrowed a sewing machine to learn alterations on second-hand clothes she bought. Another used the library's nail gun to fix fencing in his home.
The concept of community libraries is growing rapidly in the UK, with over 100 locations now open across the country. Leamington's shop is one of these, and it operates in partnership with the local Eco Hub.
The volunteers behind the "Library Of Things" aim to promote sustainable living by sharing resources and reducing waste. By making items available for borrowing, they hope to encourage people to think differently about consumption and ownership.
