Mon, 22 Jun 2026 Tesla crash that killed a woman under US federal investigation

A Tesla driver on Friday said he was using ‘self-driving’ technology after his vehicle sped into a Texas home.
The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has launched an investigation into a fatal crash involving a Tesla that crashed into a home in Texas on June 19. The vehicle, a Tesla Model 3, sped off the road and struck a house, seriously injuring a woman who was inside. She later died from her injuries. According to police reports, the driver of the Tesla was not intoxicated at the time of the crash but claimed that the vehicle's automated driving assistance system was engaged. The driver, who was also taken to hospital, is cooperating with investigators. The NHTSA has opened a special crash investigation into the incident, which is considered the most thorough and detailed form of inquiry conducted by the agency. This investigation will gather data on the crash and help improve safety performance in vehicles. Tesla's automated driving technology, known as "full self-driving (assisted)", has been criticized for its potential risks and misleading advertising claims. The NHTSA had previously expanded an investigation into this technology due to concerns over its performance in inclement weather. The incident has raised further questions about the safety of autonomous driving systems and their potential limitations.
