The film's opening is a return to form for Disney and Pixar after facing notable challenges in recent years.
Disney's Toy Story 5 has had the best opening weekend of any animated film in its franchise, with over $300m (£227m) in global ticket sales. The film, released on June 19th, follows Woody and his friends as they face a new rival - a tablet computer. The strong box office performance marks a return to form for Disney and Pixar after recent challenges. With an estimated production budget of $250m, Toy Story 5 needs to make at least twice that amount to cover marketing and other expenses. Historically, Pixar films have recouped their budgets comfortably, with some titles bringing in three times as much as they cost. The film's success is a welcome boost for the industry, which has seen declining box office revenues since the Covid-19 pandemic. Big-budget blockbusters have been particularly affected, with many underperforming at the box office. However, the Toy Story series remains one of Pixar's most lucrative franchises, having made over $3bn at the global box office since its debut in 1995.
