Wed, 24 Jun 2026 Burnham likely to replace Reeves if he becomes PM

Rachel Reeves would be offered a more junior cabinet role, the BBC understands.
Andy Burnham is expected to become Chancellor and offer Rachel Reeves a junior cabinet position if he becomes Prime Minister, according to sources close to him. A spokesperson for Burnham stated that no decisions have been made regarding appointments, but several Labour MPs assume Reeves will not continue as Chancellor. Reeves is likely to be offered a more junior role, with Ed Miliband, Wes Streeting, John Healey, and Yvette Cooper being considered as potential replacements for her position. James Purnell is expected to become Burnham's Downing Street chief of staff. Former Institute for Fiscal Studies director Paul Johnson warns that the next Chancellor will face significant economic challenges, including high borrowing rates and a need for growth-driven reforms. The UK has borrowed more than any other country in 25 years at very high interest rates, but has also failed to grow its economy to pay off debt. Johnson emphasizes the importance of growth-focused policies, including tax reform, welfare reform, and investment in areas that drive economic expansion. A new Prime Minister will also need to address the defence spending proposals controversy, with John Healey warning that the current plans fall "well short" of what is required.
