The company had said earlier this year it was planning savings to make it "more digital and AI-focused".

* British American Tobacco (BAT) plans to cut nearly a fifth of its global workforce, impacting around 9,000 employees.
* The company will eliminate 5,500 roles and outsource an additional 3,500 positions.
* BAT employs approximately 47,000 people globally and expects the cost cuts to save around £600m annually by 2028.
* The job reductions are expected to be completed by the end of this year.
* Chief executive Tadeu Marroco stated that the changes aim to make the company "more agile, cost disciplined and technology enabled".
* BAT is shifting its focus towards smoking alternatives such as vapes and nicotine pouches due to declining traditional cigarette sales.
