Thu, 02 Jul 2026 AI is 'not smart' so what's next in artificial intelligence?

Leading AI researcher Yan LeCun has a start-up which is developing a more flexible AI system.

* Yann LeCun, founder of AMI Labs, is developing a new AI system called Joint Embedding Predictive Architecture (JEPA) that can deal with complex real-world situations.
* Current Large Language Models (LLMs) like ChatGPT are limited to well-defined and predictable problems, but JEPA will be able to handle uncertain and dynamic environments.
* LeCun's goal is to create a general-purpose AI system that can be applied to various tasks with minimal training or fine-tuning.
* Other researchers, including Fei-Fei Li at World Labs and DeepMind, are also working on world models, which aim to structure knowledge in a way that can be efficiently used by AI systems.
* LeCun hopes that JEPA will be put to use next year, first in industrial settings, and eventually lead to the development of general-purpose intelligence systems.
* He believes that humans will still have a role in creating and applying AI, but that the technology will work for us and help us with tasks like decision-making.
