China's self-driving car firms have been given a headstart by the country's EV supply chain as they expand globally.
Established carmakers build the cars while specialist firms develop the autonomy technology. This has allowed them to create a seamless system from design to production. However, operating robotaxis in overseas markets will be challenging due to regulatory approvals, detailed mapping, local teams and public trust.
WeRide says regulators are becoming receptive to autonomous driving, but Chan believes it represents something bigger - China's attempt to build a high-tech economy powered by AI.
