Punters who bet more than £1,000 online in a 24-hour window will have to undergo an assessment, the regulator says.
Under-25s have lower thresholds: £750 in 24 hours and £2,250 in 90 days
Assessments based on data from credit reference agencies, not "affordability checks"
Betting and Gaming Council criticises the move, saying it may drive customers to black market
Gambling Commission says assessments will start with over-25s who spend more than £5,000 in 24 hours
First stage will affect less than 0.5% of customers
Threshold will be lowered to £1,000 in 24 hours or £750 for under-25s in future stages
