Wed, 08 Jul 2026 Hundreds of jobs at risk as John Lewis plans to cut some services

No final decision has been made but the job cuts will happen in the autumn if the redundancy plans are approved.

* John Lewis may close in-store money exchange services and dedicated gift wrapping areas, affecting around 200 staff.
* The decision is due to falling demand, with customers increasingly ordering foreign currency online and using digital payments while abroad.
* 30 shops will be affected by the closure of the money exchange service and 25 shops will be affected by the closure of the gift wrapping service.
* John Lewis plans to redeploy affected staff where possible and provide support during the consultation process.
* The retailer's latest results show a pre-tax loss of £21m, but underlying profits rose 6% to £134m. Sales across the business rose by 5% to £13.4bn.
* The closure is part of John Lewis' efforts to modernize its services and meet customers' changing needs under new chair Jason Tarry.
