Wed, 08 Jul 2026 Severn Trent avoids fine for wastewater failures

The water firm took "genuine accountability" after breaching wastewater obligations, Ofwat says.
Ofwat, the industry regulator, has stated that Severn Trent Water breached its wastewater duties by failing to effectively provide drainage and manage the contents of its sewers. However, despite "serious failings", Ofwat did not issue a fine as Severn Trent had taken steps to address the issues before an enforcement case was opened. Severn Trent invested £98m in improving its infrastructure, including additional capacity at 65 wastewater treatment sites and storm tank enhancements. This investment has led to a 41% reduction in spills from each storm overflow in 2025 compared to 2024. Ofwat's senior director for enforcement, Lynn Parker, said that Severn Trent had shown "genuine accountability" by identifying the problem, investing to fix it, and cooperating with the regulator. She stated that Ofwat will always act when companies fail their customers or the environment but also praised Severn Trent for doing the right thing. Severn Trent's chief executive, James Jesic, said that the company had accepted Ofwat's findings and was committed to delivering further improvements for its customers and the environment. The company has invested £450m in a spills reduction programme to improve storm overflows and storage capacity across its network. This case is part of Ofwat's industry-wide wastewater investigation, which has resulted in fines and enforcement packages worth more than £300m.
