The company has unveiled a massive new artificial intelligence model it says can take on top American firms.
Moonshot AI, a Chinese start-up backed by tech giants Alibaba and Tencent, has unveiled its massive new artificial intelligence model "Kimi K3", which contains 2.8 trillion parameters. The company claims that Kimi K3 can rival top American firms like OpenAI and Anthropic, and will be released as an open-source model on July 27. This marks a significant breakthrough for China's tech industry, narrowing the capabilities gap with the US. Unlike closed, proprietary systems from OpenAI or Anthropic, Kimi K3 is open-source, allowing global users to modify it for advanced reasoning and complex software development. Initial benchmarks show that Kimi K3 performs on par with leading models in the US, including GPT and Claude. The release of Kimi K3 could disrupt Silicon Valley's commercial models and has already had an impact on shares in Moonshot's domestic competitors.
