Fri, 17 Jul 2026 'Volunteering with food charity saved me from loneliness'

FoodCycle takes surplus food and turns it into three-course meals served to the community.
White started attending weekly evening meals at Primrose Hill in Sheffield, where volunteers transform surplus food into free three-course meals for anyone who wants them. He initially felt nervous about eating in front of strangers but formed friendships with other guests. Volunteering with FoodCycle has given White a sense of purpose and helped his mental health. He now leads the front-of-house team at Primrose Hill, serving dishes and chatting to guests. The charity is looking for volunteers over the summer to help cook, serve, wash up, and deliver surplus food across Sheffield, Bradford, Huddersfield, Hull, and Leeds. White's story highlights the positive impact of FoodCycle on people's lives. He said: "The other guests heard about my situation and made me feel welcome... I formed friendships and volunteering gave me meaning in life." White credits FoodCycle with saving his life from loneliness and depression.
