Sun, 19 Jul 2026 Thames Water lenders preparing legal challenge in event of Burnham nationalisation

The BBC understands creditors would would pursue payment in full of the outstanding debts, in the multi-billions of pounds.
Thames Water's lenders have offered to write off £9.4bn of its £20bn debt in exchange for leniency on future pollution fines, but this deal has been rejected by the government as being "weak" and not beneficial to consumers or the environment. In the event of full nationalization, the lenders would pursue payment in full of the outstanding debts, which could leave the new government with a significant financial burden. Thames Water's creditors insist they are still working with officials and regulators to find an agreement that will rescue the company, but sources close to them suggest they will challenge any move to nationalize. A Department for Environment spokesperson said the government was "prepared for any eventuality" but declined further comment.
