Mon, 20 Jul 2026 AliExpress fined record €550m by EU for allowing sale of illegal goods

The Chinese retailer allowed unsafe toys and counterfeit clothes to be sold on its site, says the EU.

* AliExpress has been fined a record €550m (£467m) by the EU for allowing the sale of illegal products.
* The European Commission found that AliExpress's detection systems did not work properly and many illegal products were not flagged.
* The company was also found to have failed to enforce penalties on traders selling illegal goods.
* AliExpress has 193 million users in Europe and said it would appeal the fine, calling it "disproportionate".
* The penalty is the highest fine imposed under the Digital Services Act, which requires tech giants to do more to counter illegal and harmful content.
* Under the EU's ruling, AliExpress must present a plan by October 20 that includes what action it will take to tackle the breaches.
