Tue, 21 Jul 2026 Ryanair broken window may have been caused by 'foreign object'

Ryanair's CEO Michael O'Leary says an initial investigation suggests that a "foreign object" may have damaged the engine on one of their planes, leading to a serious incident where a passenger was partially sucked out of a window. The plane, which was flying from Greece to Germany, made an emergency landing after 18-year-old Boeing 737's engine failed due to what O'Leary described as "foreign object damage" possibly occurring during takeoff in Thessaloniki. The passenger, Ljubisa Karovic, suffered serious injuries and his wife Svetlana Grkovic Maksimovic said she and two other passengers held on to his legs for several minutes before he was pulled back into the plane. The US National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the incident, with a draft report expected in about 28 days. Ryanair has stated that the engine on the plane had been fully serviced and overhauled in the past two years. However, confirmation of an external object as the cause of the damage could affect Ryanair's or Boeing's liabilities for the incident.
