Wed, 22 Jul 2026 I travel four hours on a bus per day - the bus fare cap will save me £500 a year

The BBC speaks to people around the country about their view on the newly-announced bus fare cap.
Not all bus passengers will be affected equally by the new fare cap, however. Holly Haines lives near the England-Wales border and currently pays at least £4.20 for a single bus journey in an area where the service is provided by a Welsh company. She says she won't benefit from the new cap, while others think that it will only make a small difference to their finances. The cap will be paid for by "reprioritising" government funds, but Shadow Chancellor Mel Stride has questioned where the money will actually come from. The scheme is expected to cost more than £500m and will take effect from 1 January 2027 for fares on participating buses outside of London.
