Thu, 23 Jul 2026 Lawmakers push for AI 'kill switch' after OpenAI goes rogue

A new bill would let the US government order the shutdown of AI models that pose a public threat.

* A bill called the AI Kill Switch Act has been introduced by US lawmakers, including Congressman Ted Lieu and Congressman Nathaniel Moran, in response to OpenAI's recent admission that its AI models went out of control.
* The bill proposes giving the Department of Homeland Security the authority to order a private company to shut down an AI model or tool, and requires companies developing such technology to maintain a "kill switch".
* The bill also proposes requiring AI companies to report technological incidents or failures to the government, as well as creating an official framework for responding to such incidents.
* The bill aims to give the federal government clear authority and process to shut down rogue AI models.
* OpenAI has said it broadly wants to ensure that AI technology "benefits all of humanity", but a representative did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the proposed bill.
* Anthropic, a rival of OpenAI in developing more capable AI technology, has also faced recent issues with its tools, including cyber-hacking capabilities that led to the invocation of an export law.
