Fri, 24 Jul 2026 Paramount and Warner Bros pause $110bn merger amid legal challenge

Until a judge reaches a final verdict – or until 1 June 2027 – the Hollywood studios will remain completely separate, competing operations.
The $110 billion merger between Paramount, Skydance, and Warner Bros Discovery has been put on hold until June 2027 while a judge weighs the merits of a legal challenge against the deal. The pause follows lawsuits from 12 US states and the Writers Guild of America, which argue that the merger would harm competition and lead to higher prices for consumers. The decision comes after European regulators approved the deal with certain conditions, including Paramount ending its film distribution partnership with Universal Pictures in Europe. Paramount and Warner Bros insist that combining their operations is essential to compete with digital streaming giants and tech conglomerates. They claim that a trial is the best way to prove the merger's benefits for competition, consumers, and creators. However, state officials and Hollywood unions argue that the merger gives one company too much control, reducing bargaining power for writers and crews, shrinking project options, and limiting choices for viewers. A proposed trial schedule must be submitted by July 31, and until a final verdict is reached or June 2027, Paramount and Warner Bros will remain separate competing operations.
