Tue, 28 Jul 2026 The 10 most overcrowded commuter trains revealed

Overall, overcrowding in England and Wales fell slightly last year due to increased capacity, the government says.

* Train capacity increased by 4% in 12 months
* Only 1.1% of peak-time travellers were on an overcrowded train
* Overcrowding fell slightly overall compared with autumn 2024, with an average of 16,800 (1%) passengers a day travelling in excess of capacity
* Seating capacity has grown 4% in the past year
* 98.9% of passengers typically travel on services that are not overcrowded
* A quarter of passengers travelling in and out of London at peak times had to stand
* The most overcrowded train service was a Thameslink morning rush hour service between Bedford and Three Bridges, with a load factor of 176%
* The second most crowded train was a West Midlands service from London Euston to Crewe, with a load factor of 170%
