Mon, 03 Aug 2026 Half price rail travel extended to 18-year-olds

They'll be able to buy the 16-17 Saver railcard up until the day before they turn 18.

* 18-year-olds will be able to buy half-price train tickets from most services when railcard rules change on August 17.
* Existing 16-17 Saver Railcards will remain valid for a full year from the date of purchase, rather than expiring at age 18.
* This means 17-year-olds can now buy the railcard up to the day before their 18th birthday and have it valid until the day before they turn 19.
* Over 70,000 students per year were previously £175 worse off due to this rule.
* The 16-17 Saver Railcard costs £35 per year and entitles holders to 50% off most train fares.
