Wed, 05 Aug 2026 Disney agrees deal to let TikTokers use its films and TV shows in videos

A deal between will allow some creators to use clips from Disney films and TV shows in their videos.
Disney has struck a deal with TikTok that will allow creators to use clips from Disney's movies and TV shows in their videos. This means fans can soon expect to see scenes from Star Wars, Toy Story, and Marvel films popping up in TikTok videos. The partnership is set to be launched in the US first, before expanding to other countries. The agreement follows the collapse of a $1 billion deal between Disney and OpenAI, which would have allowed AI-generated videos using Disney characters. Neither company has disclosed financial details about the new partnership. Disney's chief marketing officer, Asad Ayaz, said: "Today, fans are celebrating our stories in entirely new ways." Social media expert Matt Navarra noted that this shift marks a significant change for Hollywood, which used to market directly to fans but now needs to give them the raw materials to create content themselves. TikTok's platform sees an average of 6.5 million posts related to film and TV per day, with many creators struggling to get permission to use clips from popular shows. The new deal aims to simplify this process and boost engagement around big releases. The partnership will also give some creators access to exclusive events and a jointly-run program that showcases their videos. However, experts warn that the deal may come with risks, particularly in light of ongoing debates about TikTok's safety under European online rules. This move is part of Disney's efforts to stay relevant in the user-generated content space, following the collapse of OpenAI's AI video generation tool Sora.
