Wed, 05 Aug 2026 Trump administration pays back $100bn in 'Liberation Day' tariffs to businesses

It represents roughly 60% of all tariff revenue collected under the policy, with billions still to be repaid.
The US government has refunded $100bn (£78bn) to businesses that paid tariffs under the "Liberation Day" policy, which was deemed unlawful by the Supreme Court in February. This represents 60% of all tariff revenue collected by the government. However, there is still around $29bn worth of potential refunds being reviewed and another $1.6bn waiting for importers to provide their banking details. Major American corporations such as Amazon have already claimed large sums back, with the company receiving around $600m in refunds during the second quarter. These refunds are usually passed on to consumers through lower prices or direct reimbursement by businesses. The US Customs and Border Protection agency is still reviewing pending claims and importers' updates their banking details, which may lead to further tariff payouts.
