The Brazilian data protection authority, ANPD, has ordered Discord to suspend its live streaming feature after a teenage girl allegedly took her own life following pressure from others in a private group on the platform. The incident prompted an investigation by the ANPD, which found that Discord lacks real-time access to livestream content, making it difficult to detect and prevent automated violations. The suspension is set to remain in place until Discord implements adequate protective measures for minors, including age verification checks. Discord has three days to comply with the order and can appeal within 10 business days. If Discord fails to meet the requirements, it may face fines of up to $9.67 million per violation. Discord's spokesperson stated that they are committed to user safety and have already shut down the private server involved in the incident. They also claim that evidence suggests the criminal activity was coordinated on other platforms before and after the Discord server was created. The incident has led to the arrest of five teenagers in connection with the 13-year-old girl's death. The ANPD is seeking to ensure that social media platforms prioritize user safety, particularly for minors.
