Fri, 14 Aug 2026 US says dozens of countries helped China dodge Trump's tariffs

A new US report said China had moved goods through nations with lower tariffs to dodge higher levies.
The White House has accused over 40 countries, including Canada, India, Mexico, Japan and South Korea, of helping China evade US tariffs by routing exports through nations with lower import duties. According to the White House, this practice, known as transshipping, has cost American jobs and billions of dollars in revenue. The report estimates that between $30 billion and $300 billion worth of goods have been moved from countries with higher tariff rates to those with lower rates. The US claims that China is using third countries as a stopover and repackaging goods to hide their real origin, allowing them to obtain lower tariffs. The White House describes this process as "fraud cloaked in paperwork". The report also states that the US has deployed artificial intelligence tools to catch transshipment efforts and identify the global Shadow Transshipment Network through which China's tariff evasion moves. This development is likely to add to the tensions between the US and China ahead of a meeting between President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping in Washington.
