Tue, 18 Aug 2026 Homeowner feared energy grant scheme was a scam

Councils in Cambridgeshire have asked the government for more money after the success of the scheme.

* David Brain, a homeowner in Wisbech, Cambridgeshire, had solar panels installed through the Warm Homes Local Grant scheme and saw his electricity bill drop to 2p a day.
* The council in Cambridgeshire has used up its £3.5m grant and written to the government asking for more money.
* The warm homes grant is available for homes with an energy performance certificate of D or below and an annual household income of usually £36,000 or less.
* Labour councillor Rosy Moore said that the partnership in Cambridgeshire has been "so successful" that all its funding is booked to be spent.
* Trevor Dewey, from Little Downham, had been hoping to use the scheme but was told that it had run out of money and might not have more funds for 12 months.
* The government's Energy Secretary said that their priority is "bringing bills down for good" and that the Warm Homes Plan will roll out more upgrades across the country.
