The States says the school uniform policy should be "a welcome relief" for families' budgets.
A new policy limiting school uniforms to five branded items per child has been introduced in Jersey, with some schools previously requiring as many as 11 branded items. The government estimates that uniform costs can range from £115 to £294 per child, but the new policy should provide "a welcome relief" to families. According to a market study by the Jersey Competition Regulatory Authority (JCRA), branded items made up about 40% of school uniform requirements and reducing costs was deemed essential for ensuring access to education for all. The JCRA's recommendations were taken into account when introducing the new policy, which aims to balance school identity with affordability. Eligible families can also receive a government bonus of up to £150 per child towards back-to-school costs.
