Thu, 20 Aug 2026 Travelodge boss resigns as chain tackles security after sex assault at hotel

Jo Boydell had been criticised for the company's handling of issues with its safety and security.
Travelodge CEO Jo Boydell has stepped down amid safety concerns after a sexual assault at one of its hotels. In December 2022, a woman was attacked by a man who had obtained a key card to her room in Maidenhead. The perpetrator, Kyran Smith, was jailed for over seven years. The incident was followed by reports of other security breaches, including a domestic violence victim being given a key to her abuser's location and guests being mistakenly given access to occupied rooms. Travelodge has launched an independent review into its security measures. Boydell faced criticism for the company's handling of safety issues, with some accusing her of being aware of the assault earlier than she claimed. She said that the incident had been "handled on my behalf" but acknowledged there were "serious failures". Travelodge has since implemented new measures to address security concerns, including requiring explicit permission from guests before issuing replacement room keys and checking all UK rooms for secondary deadbolts. The company's investors are also being urged to provide capital for "deep changes" within the firm. An independent review of Travelodge's security is ongoing, led by barrister Paul Greaney KC. Travelodge has been criticized for prioritizing cost-cutting over guest safety, with some calling for the business model to be revised.
