Wed, 26 Aug 2026 Meta to pay up to $18bn to settle claims its platforms harm children

The deal has been reached during a California federal court trial over claims brought by US states.
- Company must pay 48 states, plus District of Columbia and three territories - New features to be implemented on Instagram and Facebook aimed at protecting kids online - Default daily time limits and night-time blocks will be introduced for teen users - Meta has denied any wrongdoing as part of the settlement - The payment will be distributed in annual instalments over a 10-year period
