* Households can save between £70 and £110 per year on their energy bills, depending on how the panels are orientated and used.
* The government expects plug-in solar panels to help households reduce reliance on overseas fuel sources and lower their energy consumption.
* However, experts warn that buyers should have their wiring checked by a professional before buying and installing the panels.
* Plug-in solar panels generate less power than rooftop solar panels and will not qualify for the Smart Export Guarantee, which pays people for excess solar power.
* The microinverter, which turns the current from the panel into electricity homes can use, limits output to 800 watts to prevent overloading the home's electrical system.
* Retailers including Argos will be stocking plug-in solar panels from Thursday, and other shops are expected to follow suit.
