The group - which includes Audi, Porsche, Skoda as well as the VW brand - plans to cut a total of 100,000 by 2030.
Volkswagen's board has approved a plan to cut an additional 50,000 jobs by 2030 as part of its turnaround program. This brings the total number of positions the company plans to shed to 100,000. The move aims to reduce costs and increase competitiveness, with the company prioritizing production of "most compelling vehicles" and making more of each model to lower expenses.
The decision is a result of Volkswagen's struggles with falling profits due to declining sales in key markets such as China and the US, as well as increased competition from Chinese carmakers. The company employs over 660,000 people worldwide and has said that production capacity at some plants exceeds demand, leading to plans for alternative uses or closures.
Volkswagen's chief executive Oliver Blume described the job cuts as a "strong signal" for the company's future, stating that it is taking responsibility for its entire workforce. The restructuring marks the largest in Volkswagen's almost nine-decade history and will involve both management and non-management roles.
