Mon, 07 Sep 2026 Five dead after Amazon cargo plane crashes at Miami airport

Five people are dead and five seriously injured after a Boeing 767-300 cargo plane "overran" the runway and caught fire, officials say.

* A Boeing 767-300 cargo aircraft operated by 21 Air overshot the runway while attempting to land at Miami International Airport, killing five people and seriously injuring five more. The flight departed from Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in San Juan, Puerto Rico, before crashing just before 14:00 local time (19:00 GMT). Amazon said it is "working closely with local authorities and officials to understand exactly what happened". All flights were grounded by the Federal Aviation Administration as fire crews responded to the crash site. The incident occurred over Labor Day weekend, one of the busiest travel times of the year. Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava said rescue crews arrived at the scene within "seconds" of the crash. Three of the five injured people are in critical condition, according to Miami Fire Chief Raied Jadallah. The cause of the crash is unknown and will be investigated by the National Transportation Safety Board. Amazon issued a statement expressing condolences to the victims' families and offering support to those affected. The Transportation Safety Administration said there would be 17 million travelers passing through US airports in the week leading up to Labor Day.
